A certificate can open the doors to advancement in your field by giving you a new or advanced skill set. Some certificates can even cover continuing education requirements for certain fields.

The Southeast Missouri State Univeristy CAST program is committed to reducing the occurrences of child abuse through education, and training professionals to improve responsiveness and inter-organizational collabortaion.

Protecting children and building healthy families are core values of this commitment. Also valued is the importance of helping professionals better employ a collaborative systems approach to protocol development to meet the needs of victims.

CAST Certificate Program Curriculum

Choose 3 courses from the following: 

  • HS 301. Foundations of Child Maltreatment and Advocacy (3).  
  • HS 401. Professional and System Responses (3).  
  • HS 402. Responding to the Survivor (3).  
  • ED 535. The Trauma Informed Professional (3). 
  • CF 385. Stress, Violence, Trauma, and Families (3). 

HS 301. Foundations of Child Maltreatment and Advocacy  

Introduction to issues pertaining to child maltreatment and advocacy. Emphasis on legal framework, cultural perspectives, and social system responses. 

HS 401. Professional and System Responses  

Systems approach to professional responsiveness to allegations of child maltreatment. Emphasis on child crime identification, investigation, and prosecution. 

HS 402. Responding to the Survivor  

A multidisciplinary perspective to child maltreatment prevention, advocacy, and treatment. Emphasis on developing greater competencies in professional intervention strategies. 

ED 535. The Trauma Informed Professional  

Developing trauma knowledgeable professionals to foster resiliency building practices in children impacted by trauma. 

CF 385. Stress, Violence, Trauma, and Families  

An overview of the causes, signs, adaptations and impact of stress, violence and trauma on the family. Theoretical models application. Prerequisite: CF 209.
