Why Should I Major in Theatre and Dance at Southeast?

  • Students who graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performing Arts demonstrate advanced skill in the creative process through pre-production research and analysis, rehearsals and performances. Graduates will also demonstrate professional competence in auditioning, interview technique and portfolio/resumé preparation and presentation.
  • Students who graduate from Southeast with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre will develop competent skills used in the various areas of producing public theatre performances. These skills include, areas such as, script analysis, directing, acting, scenic design and set construction, costume design and construction, makeup, stage lighting and theatre management and publicity.
  • Students who wish to minor in theatre or dance can declare a Minor in Theatre or a Minor in Dance and participate in the Department’s theatrical productions and dance concerts.”
  • Southeast theatre and dance students have a multitude of opportunities to participate in internships and field experiencesin professional dance and theatre companies such as The Julliard School, Jacob’s Pillow, Stages, Sante Fe Opera, Berkshire Theatre Festival, New Harmony Theatre, Huron Playhouse and Asolo Theatre.
  • Southeast’s theatre and dance program enhances your classroom activities by encouraging you to participate in the six main-stage productions each academic year. These productions usually consist of contemporary tragedies, comedies, dance concerts, musical comedies and dramas. Information on Southeast’s current season productions is available online.
  • Southeast emphasizes the importance of providing students with hands-on experience and thus gives students the opportunity to apply for departmental “workships.” Students can apply for four types of “workships” which include positions as shop assistants, costume assistants, publicity assistants and box office assistants. All workshop positions are paid and thus provide students with the opportunity to not only gain valuable experience, but also to help finance their education.   • Students in Southeast’s Theatre and Dance Program are exposed to highly experienced faculty that are recognized for their own talent, training, professional affiliations, publications and expertise in a variety of disciplines. The theatre and dance faculty have served as directors, actors, writers, artistic directors, costume designers and lighting technicians in many theatres and dance companies such as Lincoln Center (New York, N.Y.), American Academy of Dramatic Art (Hollywood, Calif.), Shakespeare in the Park (Ft. Worth, Texas), Southern Repertory Theatre (New Orleans, La.), Cultural Arts Center of Central Florida, La Petit Theatre de Vieux Carre (New Orleans, La.), Central Park Players, Yale Repertory Theatre, Mississippi Shakespeare Festival and Tennessee Repertory Theatre, Miami City Ballet, and Santa Fe Opera.
  • As a theatre and dance major at Southeast, you will have access to facilities that give you ample opportunities to develop and practice your craft in a professional atmosphere. Current facilities include two large dance studios, a 900-seat proscenium theatre, a 200-seat black box theatre, fully equipped scenic and costume shops, a state-of-the-art design lab, and professional-calibre lighting and sound studios.
  • As a theatre and dance major at Southeast, you develop the necessary skills to enter into the best graduate programs and professional internships, as well as careers in a variety of professions. Some of the career professions include, but are not limited to, theatre and dance artists and technicians, art administrators, educators and film and television producers.
