Southeast Missouri State University

The Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation at Southeast Missouri State University has been preparing recreation and leisure professionals since 1988. Our recreation program’s comprehensive curriculum provides students with the skills and experience necessary to promote conservation, health and wellness, and social equity.

The major is accredited by the National Recreation and Parks Association Council on Accreditation. Recreation students choose from a wide variety of career paths including programming and administration of recreational services for city parks and recreation departments, non-profit organizations such as YMCAs and Boys and Girls Clubs, branches of the military and for people with disabilities and other special needs.

  • Interact with qualified, award winning faculty in a small class environment.
  • Have the opportunity to apply the knowledge you gain in the classroom to real-world experience in the field.
  • Immediately begin interacting with recreation professionals.
  • Complete a 12-week, 480-hour internship.
