Student Teaching

Field experiences in Southeast’s teacher preparation program are usually completed in the Southeast Missouri region, although some student teaching opportunities exist in other locations, including internationally.

You will have at least five formal field experiences, including your semester of student teaching. Each field experience is combined with education coursework, enabling you to fully utilize your skills as you learn them.

Block I
Examples of field experience you will gain during Block I include:

  1. Observing adolescents in social and organized activities
  2. Interviewing an educational professional, three students, and a parent/guardian
  3. Attending a professional meeting (i.e. faculty meeting, conference, professional association meeting etc.)
  4. Leading adolescents or assisting a leader of adolescents in an appropriate activity

Block II
You will complete 32 to 40 field experience hours ranging from elementary to middle school level through high school during Block II. Examples of field experience you will gain during Block II include:

  1. Observing and interacting with teachers and students
  2. Designing, implementing and evaluating lessons
  3. Demonstrating professional ethical standards
  4. Evaluating and reflecting on one’s daily experiences/activities

Elementary Practicum
During your required elementary practicum, you will complete the following activities:

  1. Observing the physical education teacher
  2. Planning lessons for elementary school students
  3. Teaching lessons to elementary students
  4. Evaluating the teaching of lessons
  5. Reflecting on the teaching process

Block III
Prior to your student teaching experience, you will complete 30 field experience hours during Block III. These hours will be performed in a middle level to high school physical education field setting, and you will have the opportunity to participate in the following activities:

  1. Observing the physical education teacher
  2. Working with individual and/or small groups
  3. Developing, teaching and evaluating a unit of instruction
  4. Preparing, implementing and evaluating lessons
  5. Reviewing and conducting extracurricular activities (as instructed by the field supervisor)

Student Teaching
Your field experience will culminate with your semester-long student teaching experience, which is usually completed during the final semester of your senior year. You will be placed at two schools in two different grade levels and will have the opportunity to put all of your previously gained knowledge to use and to gain additional experience in all the facets of the cooperating teacher’s assigned duties.
