Why Should I Major in Music at Southeast?

  • As a music major at Southeast, you will be involved in a program of study that will prepare you to teach, perform or pursue a related career in music.

  • The music program at Southeast, in which more than 20 full-time and adjunct faculty teach, is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. Members of our faculty have studied at such prestigious institutions of music as the Eastman School of Music, The Juilliard School, The London College of Music, and the Universities of Michigan, Iowa and Texas and have performed nationally and abroad, with recognition in Canada, China, England, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and the Ukraine.

  • At Southeast, you will be exposed to a rewarding cultural and intellectual environment in which you will have access to the wide variety of performing and learning experiences expected at a large university, as well as the individual attention characteristic of a small college.

  • The Department of Music at Southeast offers more than ten ensembles for instrumental and vocal students, giving students many opportunities to gain valuable performing experience. Students also have the opportunity to participate in small chamber groups of various instrumental combinations.

  • Southeast has a strong commitment to experiential learning. As a music student, you will have the opportunity to gain real-world experience in your field through student teaching opportunities in area schools, solo recitals and the teaching of private lessons in the Southeast Missouri Music Academy.

  • The music program at Southeast rigorously prepares its students for teaching, performing or graduate school. Former Southeast music students have gone on to such places as The New England Conservatory of Music, The Juilliard School and the University of Texas.
