As a mass communication student, you can take advantage of many student and professional organizations offering priceless hands-on experience and career information as well as professional contacts and networking.

Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) – Students can join the local chapter of this organization, whose membership includes professional reporters and editors in addition to Southeast faculty and journalism students. Members are dedicated to freedom of the press and the public’s “right to know.”

Creative Minds Advertising Association (CMAA) – The student chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) http://www.aaf.org/ involves students with seminars, hands-on projects, conferences and contacts in the professional sector.

Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) – The student chapter http://www.prssa.org/  of the national Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) http://www.prsa.org/  involves students with workshops, field trips, and participation in promotional campaigns for campus and community organizations.

Media Communications Association-International (MCA-I)/International Television Association (ITVA) – A professional chapter involving both students and professionals interested in corporate video. Speakers and field trips give students further insight into their chosen careers. Members often assist campus and community organizations in significant video projects.

Kappa Tau Alpha (KTA) – This national honorary society for journalism and mass communication awards membership to graduates who have maintained a minimum 3.5 GPA. Only the top 10 percent of the department’s total graduates per semester may be selected for membership.

The Capaha Arrow
– Southeast’s national award-winning newspaper. Students contribute to the newspaper beginning with their first journalism class, gaining knowledge of writing, editing and designing a weekly publication.

The National Broadcasting Society/Alpha Epsilon Rho - The Southeast chapter of NBS brings members and area radio professionals together to discuss significant trends and events occurring in the radio broadcasting industry.  In addition to monthly chapter meetings, annual regional and national NBS conventions, NBS offers students excellent opportunities for networking with pros.

KDMC – a campus radio station. Staffed by students, the station offers announcing, control room, production, and management experiences in a controlled setting.

KRCU 90.9 FM – the National Public Radio affiliate for the Southeast Missouri region. Students compete for staff positions in announcing, news production and promotion.

Southeast Creative Communications (SCC) – A student-operated public relations agency that accepts both on- and off-campus clients, providing students with experience in client relations and campaigns.

Perspectives Association of Minority Communicators (PAMC) – A professional student organization created to examine issues involving diversity in the media and the field of speech communcation. Membership is open to any student pursuing a major or minor in the Department of Communication.
