Southeast Missouri State University

Real World Experience

At Southeast, we strive to provide our students with real-world experience connected with their chosen major and desired career. We believe that this prepares you for the world awaiting you after college.

If you are preparing to become a teacher of English at the secondary or middle school level, you will have the opportunity to student teach in various school settings in the area. This will give you valuable practical experience in the classroom.

If you see yourself in a publishing, editing, or writing career in the future, Southeast’s Department of English offers you numerous opportunities to practice and sharpen your skills before heading out into “the real world.” Here are some publications produced by the Department and the University for which you might be interested in working, writing and/or editing:

  • Big Muddy: A Journal of the Mississippi River Valley: A semi-annual national publication that explores multi-disciplinary issues and events concerning the ten-state area that borders the Mississippi River. Submissions are accepted year-round. Big Muddy is produced at the University by students in the small-press publishing program.
  • Journey: Journey is Southeast's undergraduate student literary magazine. Students of any major may submit work for possible publication. Submissions are chosen and Journey is published by undergraduate staff members.
  • The Cape Rock: This internationally acclaimed poetry journal is published by the Department of English. Southeast English professor Dr. Harvey Hecht is the editor. Students may submit poems at any time to Dr. Hecht.  For more information, visit the Web site

  • Helix: This journal produced by the English Department, publishing graduate and undergraduate research from all academic areas. Any student, including graduating seniors and graduate students, may submit research. Helix is managed by Dr. David Reinheimer of the English Department. For more information, see the Helix web site:

  • The Capaha Arrow: This is a newspaper for the students of Southeast. It is staffed by students from all disciplines and includes news directed to the student population of Southeast.
