Southeast Missouri State University

Majors

Early Childhood Education (BSED) – An Early Childhood Education graduate will be qualified to teach birth through grade three (or grade six with additional certification).

Elementary Education (BSED) – An Elementary Education graduate will be qualified to teach grades one through six. An area of concentration is required. A student can extend their teaching qualifications with a concentration in early childhood or exceptional child education.

Exceptional Child (BSED) – An Exceptional Child Education graduate will be qualified to teach students in grades kindergarten through 12 who have learning disabilities, mental handicaps, or behavior disorders.

What is the difference between an early childhood education major with an additional elementary education certification and an elementary education major with an early childhood concentration?

  • Early childhood education with added certification from birth – grade six is for students who prefer working with young children but may also want to teach grades four – six.
  • Elementary education with an early childhood concentration, which would also allow birth – grade six certification, is intended for students who are most interested in teaching grades one – six but also have an interest in kindergarten and pre-school.

Both programs require the same length of time to complete.

What is the block program?

Southeast Missouri State University developed this innovative program in a joint effort with area schools in 1987.  The block program combines field experience with theory and techniques and involves a sequence of four or more semester blocks. Block I is designed to acquaint education majors with the field of education through actual classroom observation. Students continue to receive additional field experience that correlates with the theories and techniques they are studying as they progress through the block system. The final block is the professional semester comprised of student teaching.
