Real World Experience The Department of Biology provides numerous research and teaching labs that provide you with many excellent opportunities for hands-on experiences in laboratory and field-based settings. If you specialize in Organismal, Ecological and Evolutionary biology or Microbiology, Cell and Molecular biology, you’ll have a number of opportunities to conduct, present and publish research with faculty members in the department. Our faculty members conduct active, on-going research programs, including current research on aquatic and wildlife toxicology, ornithology, plant biology, conservation biology, entomology and mammalogy. The University greenhouses, and a regional herbarium and museum containing biological materials will also provide you with research opportunities. The biology program offers an impressive variety of field-based research opportunities, many of which are close to campus. The University also has several affiliations that give you experiences in additional settings, including the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Many field-based courses frequently take students to research locations around our region, and extended field-trips to other states and countries have also been conducted. For more information on the biology program’s extensive research opportunities and facilities, check out our facilities section. (link) Students specializing in these areas can gain additional experience through a variety of internship and part-time employment opportunities, including the Department of Conservation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. If you decide to specialize in biomedical sciences, which is designed for students who plan to apply for admission into a health professional school (medicine, dentistry, optometry, chiropractic, etc.), you can take advantage of the good relationships that Southeast has built with our community’s healthcare professionals and our two local hospitals. These ongoing relationships enable our students to experience the medical field first-hand by providing numerous opportunities for volunteering, part-time employment, internships and job shadowing. |
