Why Should I Major in Biology at Southeast?

Biology options include biomedical sciences; microbiology, cell, molecular and biotechnology biology; organismal, ecological and evolutionary biology; general biology; wildlife and conservation biology; and biology education.

  • Southeast’s biology program offers you a variety of opportunities to gain substantial hands-on experience beginning early in your college career. The program features many excellent research facilities, including excellent lab and field-based settings located on and off campus.
  • As a biology student, you will have the opportunity to work with faculty conducting research, thus further developing the knowledge and skills you will need to advance in your field. These research projects often allow students the opportunity to present findings at conferences or regional and national meetings and to co-author articles for publication in scientific journals.
  • Students interested in field biology will have an impressive variety of field-based research opportunities, including several near-by state parks, conservation areas and wildlife sanctuaries. In addition, weekend field trips to various regional locations and summer field courses at Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory are also offered.
  • Southeast’s biology program features several student organizations that give you the chance to interact with other students and professionals and to expand your knowledge of your chosen field.
  • Students choosing the biology program’s biomedical option can take advantage of the good relationships Southeast has developed with our community’s healthcare professionals and our two local hospitals. These ongoing relationships will help you build professional contacts and will provide you with numerous opportunities to gain first-hand experience in the medical field through volunteering, part-time employment, internships and shadowing.
  • Southeast students benefit from small classes and a low student-faculty ratio of 17 to 1. Our biology faculty members are at Southeast because they are committed to offering you the faculty involvement and interaction that can’t be found at larger, less personalized schools.
