Why Should I Major in Art at Southeast?
- As an art major at Southeast, you will benefit from numerous opportunities to develop contacts and gain exposure to the art world through workshops, lectures, art exhibitions, visiting artists and trips to view important art collections and exhibitions.

- Southeast’s art program offers you the chance to gain first-hand experience and expand your professional knowledge through internships and assistantships in graphic design, gallery management, museums and art centers.
- During your senior year in Southeast’s art program, you will develop a portfolio of your work and participate in a senior art exhibition, thus better preparing yourself to enter graduate school or a career in the art world.
- The River Campus Art Gallery and the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum and Gallery, which feature permanent collections and special monthly exhibitions, will provide you with a source of inspiration and serve as an arena for you to gain public exposure and feedback on your artwork.
- Southeast art faculty take students to Chicago, New York and other major art centers to visit galleries and view architecture, providing you with further creative inspiration and networking opportunities.
- As a student in Southeast’s art program, you will benefit from an impressive array of state-of-the-art studios and art facilities, many of which feature digital technology. Our art studios are open until midnight daily to provide you with creative flexibility.
- You will have the chance to join other Southeast art students, faculty members and members of the local arts community in the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, thus further enhancing your professional exposure and helping to promote the arts throughout the region.
- Southeast’s art faculty excel in their fields, thus providing you with quality instruction and inspiration. A number of our faculty exhibit their artwork in galleries and museums in major cities across the country, including Chicago, New York, Salt Lake City, Kansas City, San Francisco and Washington D.C. Several also travel abroad frequently, often times teaching or guiding student tours in international art centers.
- Students in Southeast’s art program benefit from individualized instruction and small classes with a low student-faculty ratio of 17 to 1 or lower.
