After receiving a bachelor's degree in psychology from Bowling GreenStateUniversity, I worked in a variety of positions, including school social worker, counselor for homeless mentally ill, vegetarian caterer and natural foods buyer.  I also took time off to pursue spiritual studies and related volunteer work, which led to my returning to school for an MSW (1996) from ArizonaStateUniversity.  Prior to receiving a Ph.D. in social work from the University of Georgia (2005), I worked in substance abuse prevention, treatment foster care and mental health.  My dissertation research involved looking at an online drug court program evaluation tool (Journey Mapping) that tracks both qualitative and quantitative data.  Other research interests include nonviolent communication, spiritual interventions and student learning outcomes.  My published journal articles are in the area of substance abuse prevention and treatment.

While working on my doctoral degree, I taught both research and practice social work courses at the master's level, receiving several teaching awards and inclusion in the 2005 Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. My love for teaching and my students have been the joy of my life and the cornerstone of my academic career.

When I'm not teaching, I enjoy hiking, Florida beaches, vegetarian cooking and studying alternative, natural medicine.
