2009 NIRSA Region 4 Student Lead On
February 5-7, 2009

Welcome!
This is a very exciting time for us here at Southeast to be hosting a student lead on.  Student Lead On is a great opportunity for you, the students, to attend a NIRSA conference that is significantly smaller than the National Conference.  This allows you to see how NIRSA conferences are run without the masses.  This lead on is also an excellent time to network with people from your region and states that are close to Region IV.

Why You Should Attend Student Lead On 2009!

1. The Region IV Student Lead On is a GREAT Learning Opportunity!
The Lead On Workshop is all about students. It’s about exposure to the field of campus recreation and other professionals assisting the student attendees in learning about opportunities within the field. It’s about networking – speaking and meeting with other students to learn about “how things are done at your campus” or graduate assistant opportunities that are coming up in the fall. It’s about learning new ways to do things, say things, and taking information you learn at the workshop back to your campus to share with other there! It’s also about our national organization, the NIRSA, and what it can do to help you!

2. Affordable Cost
Compared to a professional conference the cost is very affordable. The low cost can be very motivating for you to learn and develop your knowledge and skills.
3. Wonderful Networking Opportunities
You will meet many students and professionals from other universities and settings, exchanging ideas and discussing issues, which can be a very eye-opening experience for you.

4. Professional Development/Leadership Opportunities
The Lead On Workshop is about giving student an opportunity to present, many for the first time. Professionals will also be presenting, many times to assist and help students better themselves personally and professionally. If you have an interest in presenting or you would like to share information on something you do well at your campus, please submit a presentation proposal for this workshop! It’s about meeting new people and “coming out of your box” and absorbing as much info as you can from what others say and do!

5. Great Location and Facilities
Cape Girardeau is located along Interstate 55.  Missouri is located centrally to many surrounding states.  Southeast Missouri State University has a great recreation facility along with brand-new state-of-the-art aquatic center with a bouldering wall, rope swing and zip-line.

What is the Region IV Student Lead On Workshop All About?

Lead On is all about students. Lead On originated in Region III many years ago and has spread to all of the other NIRSA Regions. Its design is to introduce students to the many opportunities available to them in campus recreation. With the help of professionals that attend, Lead On is a way for many of them (who attended as students) to give something back. This workshop is all about the student!

Lead On is about learning what NIRSA (National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association) is all about. Lead On is about networking and meeting new students and professionals from other universities or settings.  Lead On is about educational sessions, many of which provided by students, that gives students an opportunity to professional present for the first time, but also gives them information and a different look on “how to do things”. Lead On is about the next step of your professional career – taking about job and assistantship opportunities.

But most of all, Lead On is about fun and to be energized about what you do!

Southeast Missouri State University is proud to host the Region IV Student Lead On this year in Cape Girardeau. Yes, it may be a little north for most, but we think it’s definitely worth the drive to be a part of the workshop. Our theme this year, “Going Pro…. Show Me!” is a great way to showcase the many professional development-related topics that will be discussed and also a big welcome to many to the state of Missouri!

About Southeast Missouri State University

Founded in 1873, Southeast Missouri State University has a proud history of excellence in education. First founded as a teacher’s college, the institution has grown into a comprehensive University with more than 150 academic programs in five colleges. In 1899, Southeast’s fifth president, Willard Vandiver, coined the phrase “show me,” which became our unofficial state motto.

About Cape Girardeau

The City of Cape Girardeau just celebrated its 200th year in 2006.  The town was officially founded on February 3, 1806, in its present location, when Lorimier donated a tract of land for the public good. Today, Cape Girardeau serves as a regional hub for health care, shopping, dining, and education.  We have a variety of attractions offering a multitude of things to see and do.  Our many local industries provide a source of employment for the surrounding communities.
