Construction of Transit Nexus Under Way at Multi-Modal Transfer Facility

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., June 16, 2009 -- Work is under way this summer on a Transit Nexus at Southeast Missouri State University's Multi-Modal Transfer Facility off New Madrid Street.

The Transit Nexus will provide a turnaround for Southeast shuttles and a centralized hub for pickup and drop off of students riding the University's shuttle system.

The project, now in its fourth phase, will add a paved parking lot just off New Madrid with 190 spaces and a gravel lot behind it with 161 new spaces, according to Brent Pfeiffer, Facilities Management project manager.

Three bus shelters will be erected at the front of the Transit Nexus for students waiting for shuttles, he said. Current bus shelters on Rec Drive just off New Madrid and another along the north side of the Student Aquatic Center will then be removed, he said, thus creating a centralized drop off/pickup hub at the Transit Nexus.

Work at the Multi-Modal Transfer Facility site is expected to be completed by the end of June. The new lots and Transit Nexus are expected to be fully operational by mid-July, Pfeiffer said.
