Robert Conger Applied Trombone and Euphonium, Director of Jazz Studies, Music Education, Dept. Webmaster Robert Conger, associate professor of music, has been teaching at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau since 2004. His responsibilities include directing the Southeast Jazz Program, teaching applied low brass (trombone, euphonium and tuba), conducting and instrumental music education classes. He coordinates and directs the annual Clark Terry/Phi Mu Alpha Jazz Festival, for the Department of Music. In addition, Dr. Conger is the Webmaster of the department Web site. In May 2007, Southeast’s He also is a member of the Southeast Faculty Brass Quintet, a very popular chamber group which performs both on- and off-campus at least 30 times per year. In addition, he recently organized the Sultans of Swing, a jazz combo which frequently performs around town. Dr. Conger’s trombone performances include solo recitals, jazz combos, brass quintet, as well as orchestral playing. Most recently he will perform with the Paducah Symphony Orchestra beginning with the 2009-2010 season. He received his Bachelor's degree in Music Education from East Carolina University, his Master's of Music in music theory/composition from Northwestern University, and his Doctorate in Music Arts in trombone performance from North Texas State University. He also has been a member of the faculty at Fort Hays State University, Miami University, and taught in the public schools of Florida, South Carolina and Texas for 20+ years. His middle and high school bands achieved superior ratings in all areas and he was honored at two different public schools as their ‘Teacher of the Year.’ Dr. Conger has conducted many honor bands including All-West Tennessee Red Band, Northeastern Missouri Honorable Mention Band, Eastern Missouri Conference Band, Southeast Missouri All-District Jazz Band, the Florida Middle School All State Band, Kansas Lions Band, and numerous regional honor bands in many states. He is a member of the International Trombone Association, Phi Mu Alpha, MENC, Missouri Bandmasters, Florida Bandmasters Association, International Association of Jazz Educators, Missouri Music Educators and is available as a soloist, clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor.
