Southeast Missouri State University

Students in the Department of Mass Media have two experiential learning opportunities available to them that can be completed for course credit toward the degree.

Internships

Students who elect to enroll in the MC486 Internship course may do so for 1.0, 2.0, or 3.0 hours of credit. As an intern in a professional organization, a student will be treated as a quasi-employee who will contribute ideas and accomplishments that will aid the organization.

Pre-requisites for the MC486 Internship course are:

  • Successful completion of at least 75 hours
  • Successful completion of 12 hours of mass communication courses from a single curricular option not included in the core
  • Minimum University GPA of 2.5
  • Minimum Department GPA of 2.75

Students interested in pursuing the MC486 Internship course opportunity should submit the Internship/Practicum Application and schedule an appointment with the Department's Internship Coordinator to review the application along with a current copy of your resume.

Once a student has met with the Department's Internship Coordinator, the student should then download, complete, and submit the Internship/Practicum Agreement to the Coordinator in order to be enrolled in the MC486 Internship course.

Following completion of the internship the student must complete the online Self & Program Evaluation, and the internship supervisor should complete the online Performance Review.

Practicums

Students who elect to enroll in the MC496 Practicum course may do so for 3.0 hours of credit. A practicum student will work within the University community on a professional project.

Pre-requisites for the MC496 Practicum course are:

  • Successful completion of at least 75 hours
  • Successful completion of 12 hours of mass communication courses from a single curricular option not included in the core
  • Minimum University GPA of 2.5
  • Minimum Department GPA of 2.5
