Sara Edgerton is professor of cello and string bass at Southeast Missouri State University, and is the artistic director of the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra. Edgerton performs throughout the United States both as a modern and Baroque cellist. She has collaborated with such composers as Aaron Copland, Karel Husa, Claude Baker and Morton Subotnick in performances of their works, and has premiered a number of works for the cello. She is a member of the Southeast Baroque Ensemble, in residence at Southeast Missouri State University, and also performs with such notable period instrument ensembles as the Kingsbury Ensemble, St. Louis, and the Early Music St. Louis Ensemble.
Dr. Edgerton has appeared at numerous festivals as a cellist, including the International Music Festival (London and Oxford, England), the Aston Magna Festival in Massachusetts, the International Baroque Festival (Jackson, Mississippi), and the St. Louis Baroque Festival. She has appeared on many concert series throughout the United States and in England, and has been heard on public radio broadcasts in this country. In the Spring of 2007 and again in 2008, Dr. Edgerton performed a series of concerts in Shanghai and Hunan, China, as a member of the Christensen, Lim, and Edgerton Trio. She has given numerous lecture recitals and presentations on such topics as Baroque performance practice and the Alexander Technique at universities and at national and state conferences. She has also guest conducted for festivals, conferences, and honor orchestras.
As the Artistic Director of the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra, she conducts the orchestra in its highly successful Symphony Series at the River Campus at Southeast Missouri State University. As conductor, she has collaborated with such soloists as David Halen, Concertmaster of the St. Louis Symphony; Mark Sparks, Principal Flutist of the St. Louis Symphony; Jonathan Vinocour, Principal Violist of the St. Louis Symphony; Rhonda Larson, Grammy-Award winning flutist; Neal E. Boyd, 2008 Winner of "America's Got Talent," as well as other nationally and internationally acclaimed artists. She also has led the orchestra in concert appearances throughout Missouri, and conducted the orchestra in its 2009 tour of China, including performances at the Central Conservatory, Beijing, in Shanghai and Hangzhou, and on the Great Wall of China.
Dr. Edgerton received her undergraduate degree in cello performance from the Eastman School of Music as a student of Ronald Leonard and Alan Harris, and the Master of Arts and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from Cornell University, where she was the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards. She also has studied extensively in England with artist teacher William Pleeth. Several recent awards that Dr. Edgerton has received include the Award for Outstanding Scholarship and Creative Activity from the College of Liberal Arts at Southeast Missouri State University (2005), the Artist Teacher Award from the Missouri Chapter of ASTA (2006), the Southeast Alumni Faculty Award (2009), and the Award for Distinguished Service from the College of Liberal Arts at Southeast (2010).
