Courtney Kisat earned her PhD from Southern Illinois University in 2013 and directs the secondary social studies education program at Southeast Missouri State University, drawing upon her own experience as a public school social studies teacher. She has recently presented at social studies education conferences on topics such as problem-based learning and professional identity in pre-service teachers. She also participates in the open education resources (OER) movement, which promotes free and open access to educational resources, in the belief that knowledge is meant to be shared. Her curriculum emphasizes the need for media literacy and social action projects in social studies classrooms. Dr. Kisat remains active in her home field of historical studies as well, specializing in modern American history with an emphasis on poverty studies and women's studies.
