The Horizons Enrichment Center teaches basic life skill lessons, offers a variety of services, and provides the opportunity for individuals with special needs to access community facilities and events. We offer supervision, exercise and recreation, life skill activities, social interaction, transportation, and community involvement in a safe, warm and caring atmosphere.

The center is licensed by the Department of Health and Senior Services and the Department of Mental Health. We serve persons with developmental and mental disabilities in the surrounding areas of Cape Girardeau, Scott, and Bollinger counties.

Our license allows for 55 participants and we have 8 full-time staff. One of our full-time staff is a Licensed Practical Nurse. We continue to seek new and exciting ways of learning and incorporating skills into everyday life situations. We work closely with family members, guardians, and providers to make sure all services provided are meaningful and justified.

The program is sponsored by the College of Health and Human Services through the Department of Child and Family Studies at Southeast Missouri State University.

Our three-fold purpose:

  • To help meet the needs of developmentally disabled adults who are 18 years of age or older, who are currently living at home or in assisted living situations in or near Cape Girardeau, Scott, or Bollinger Counties.
  • To allow parents, guardians, caregivers, and other family members a pause from the full-time responsibilities of caregiving. This day program will allow families the opportunity to become more integrated into the community and to live a more fulfilling life.
  • To benefit the community by providing training opportunities to Southeast Missouri State University students from a variety of disciplines, providing employment, encouraging families with disabled family members to locate in the community, and promoting community growth and spirit.

"I learned that I had a passion for people with disabilities and had an opportunity to work with adults with disabilities at Horizons Center."
