Harrison College of Business Career Advising

CAREER ADVISING

The Harrison College of Business (HCB) offers on-site professional career advising to business students through a unique collaboration with the University’s Office of Career Linkages and the Missouri’s Department of Workforce Development. With a career advisor co-located with the college’s academic advisors in the Academic and Professional Advising Center, Dempster Hall, room 123, students have easy access to a wide range of career services that are integrated with their academic advising. Few, if any, colleges and schools of business have integrated academic and career advising to the extent found with the Harrison College of Business.

The HCB career advisor provides the information and services in the following areas:

  • Interest assessment
  • Career exploration and planning
  • Job referrals
  • Consultations and workshops on resume preparation, search strategies, researching strategies, interview skills
  • Mock interviews

In addition to easy access to a career advisor, all business majors are required to complete a four-step process extending over their program of study. By completing this process, graduating business students are positioned for a successful job search or transition to graduate (e.g. MBA) and professional studies (e.g., law school). This multi-phase process includes completing an interest inventory that identifies strengths and weaknesses, writing and updating a resume, writing and updating a cover letter, creating an electronic personal profile, posting an electronic resume, and the opportunity to attend presentations and workshops on researching industries and companies, job search strategies, interview skills and strategies and business etiquette. Contact Amanda Barton at abarton@semo.edu,  (573) 651-5093 for additional information.
