The focus of this project is to identify vulnerabilites, earmark the condition of aging infrastructure in individual academic buildings on the central campus and to prioritize those items which pose the greatest risk for failure, as well as those that would pose the greatest inconvenience should a sudden failure occur.

Many of the campus wide systems and buildings date back to the late 1950's and 1960's. Consequently, most of the systems serving these buildings have reached or exceeded their normal expected service life. The systems continue to remain operational, however due to the age and condition, their continued service willrequire increasing levels of maintenance, component failures and service outages.

Major Issues

  • HVAC - numerous aging components and controls
  • Electrical - at capacity or undersized for today's needs
  • Plumbing - corrosion present inmany areas/failures
  • Exterior Envelope - water infiltration

Priority Criteria for These Issues

  1. Item is well beyond its useful life, presents a significant safety hazard, or of an age that such a failure would cause long-term inconvenience:1-3 years
  2. Item requires considerable maintenance, but may continue to be maintained without extensive concern of imminent failure:3-5 years
  3. Item is aging, but failure is not imminent: 5 years
