Sarah Riley Blog

Sarah Riley has been an artist-professor at Southeast Missouri State University since 1994. Professor Riley teaches courses in printmaking, figure drawing, two-dimensional design and watercolor/mixed-media. She has chaired two departments of art, first at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and then at Southeast Missouri State University from 1994 to 2000. She has a master's degree and a master's in fine arts degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia, a bachelor of fine arts degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, and has completed additional studies at Temple University/Tyler School of Art’s extension in Rome and at Anderson Ranch in Snowmass, Colo.

“I most often work in combined and layered imagery. I am interested in color, narrative, gesture, texture and discordant elements from diverse stylistic sources. Reverie is important. Poetry through a collage of images or variations is the goal.”

Professor Riley has received two fellowships to paint at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vt.  Primarily a painter and printmaker, her works are in many collections around the world, including the Springfield Art Museum, the Vivian and Gordon Gilkey Center for the Graphic Arts in Portland, Ore., the Kansas Watercolor Society, and First National Bank’s Important Missouri Artists Collection in Columbia, Mo.  She is a signature member and board member of the Watercolor USA Honor Society, and recently owned and curated exhibitions for Fountain Street Gallery in Cape Girardeau, a gallery of contemporary art.

Professor Riley likes to kayak, swim, read, play the piano, walk the beach, and otherwise enjoy life with her husband, Dr. Marc Strauss, and their dog, Cheech.
