Why get college credit in high school?

Southeast Missouri State University offers a dual credit program for high achieving junior and senior high school students. The dual credit program is a partnership between Southeast Missouri State University and local high schools which allows the dual credit student to fulfill high school requirements while earning college credit.

What are the benefits of taking Dual credit classes?
  • Students learn the rigors of college work. They learn to adjust study habits before they have to deal with the total college experience.
  • Students gain confidence in dealing with college level work.
  • Students can use dual credit work to demonstrate their ability to complete college level work as they apply for admission to colleges, universities, and vocational schools.
  • Students can complete entry level and or elective college credit.
  • Students can earn college credit at a significantly lower cost.
  • High school seniors who take rigorous courses have a much higher success rate in earning a college degrees.
Who can obtain college credit while in high school?

Important Terminology (definitions of DE, DC, and ECC)

Courses are offered through agreements between high schools and Southeast Missouri State University. High school juniors or seniors enroll in college courses and simultaneously earn college credit and high school credit for the course. Dual enrollment courses are taught by Southeast Missouri State University instructors. These courses are taught as cooperative online courses or are delivered at the Sikeston Regional Campus.
Courses are offered through agreements between high schools and Southeast Missouri State University. High school juniors or seniors enroll in a college course and simultaneously earn college credit and high school credit for the course. These courses are taught by high school faculty who are designated as adjunct faculty members by the University. They must meet credentialing requirements established by the Coordinating Board for Higher Education University’s academic departments.
High school students enroll in a college course earning college credit but not high school credit.
