Star Wars

May the force be with you as we explore this exciting workshop. Star Wars characters and events will provide us with endless possibilities to draw and paint. We will make a papier-mâché death star and a light saber. Make a mask of Chewbacca, C-3PO or even Yoda! Paint a solar system mural!

Kids Airbrush Kamp

Brush up on your skillz. This camp you will learn freehand control, stencil usage, blending and shading techniques of airbrushing. You will get to bring home your own artwork on a custom hat. This camp will surely blow you away.

Seuss on the Loose

Dr. Seuss is on the loose at Southeast this summer! Oh, The Places You’ll Go during this fun-filled week of Seuss! With crafts, activities and games galore, this camp is sure to be a week that your child will remember. Our silly Seuss activities will instill a love of rhyming and silly stories in our campers of all ages!

Safari Adventures

Let’s go on a safari to the zoo! This safari adventure includes animal-related activities, craft projects, games, and an animal visitor every day. Come explore the zoo and take a walk on the wild side! Located at Lazy L Safari Park

Launch Your Line! FULL

Become an entrepreneur and create your own fashion line for sale! Learn the ins and outs of fashion line development while honing specific fashion skills! Master the art of sewing, fabric selection, design inspiration, and more while producing your own fashion line! Then dive into the world of merchandising with Catapult: Creative House where you will work with your very own sales representative! Together you’ll explore merchandising your line. Then you’ll actually sell your creations during your very own market debut within the Catapult retail space! Sewing machines and supplies are provided, so come launch your line with Catapult: Creative House!

Let’s Get Cooking: Food & Nutrition Extravaganza FULL

Our chefs-in-training will get a crash course in nutrition and culinary skills by exploring the five food groups. Participants will prepare a variety of recipes from scratch, ranging from basic smoothies to a decorated cake, all while learning the nutritional benefits of each food. Come and learn about food and nutrition from two registered dietitians!

Animation Adventure Camp

Why go to the movies this summer when you can learn to make your own? Learn the ins and outs of directing and filming a stop-motion animation as you create your very own movie. Campers will be introduced to techniques in storytelling, set design, sound editing and more! At the end of the week, you take home a stop-motion animated short film to share with family and friends.

Creative Coding FULL

Collaborate with other campers as you design and build amazing projects using a variety of visual programming languages. Create interactive greetings, experiment with sounds and musical notes, design characters and animate them, build level-based games, and more in this hands-on creative camp.

Making Things with Chemistry

How’d they make that? In this class, you just might find out! Use chemistry to manufacture products used in everyday living (with emphasis on forensic, environmental, health, home, and industrial applications). You can take many of these products - mirrors, inks, plastics, fragrances, paints and toys - home and use them when the class ends! We will even hold a chemists competition to see who can create the best new products! No previous chemistry is required for this laboratory-based class; however, campers must be committed to carefully following instructions.

Junior Zookeeper FULL

Take a walk on the wild side and explore a career as a zookeeper! Our Junior Zookeeper Program is designed to introduce you to basic zoo keeping including how to feed, clean, and care for animals. Enroll in our hands-on educational, fun-filled course where you will learn about animals from antelope to zebras! You will also learn about animal behavior, habitats, veterinary care, conservation and more – everything you need to know to become a zookeeper. On the last day of class, parents and families are invited to attend the Junior Zookeeper Certification ceremony for the new Junior Zookeepers. Graduates of the Junior Zookeeper Program at Lazy L Safari Park are eligible to become Junior Volunteers at the Zoo at Lazy L Safari Park. *Located at Lazy L Safari Park.

Wearable Art

Art to wear! Decorate yourself! Learn and practice the wearable art techniques of hand painting denim, stenciling a shirt, paint and embellish shoes or backpacks! Tie- dye, batik, indigo and bleaching are some of the methods we will explore. Wire and macrame jewelry making, too! *Located at Cateye Glasses Studio

Itch for Computers?

Do you have the itch to be a computer programmer? Scratch it with Scratch software. During this introduction to programming, you will write programs to animate characters, play games, and tell stories. Because Scratch is internet-based, campers can continue playing with the software at home! Register today; this one will fill quickly!

CSI- Southeast

Are you obsessed with shows like CSI? Come learn the “tricks of the trade”: fingerprinting, blood testing, DNA extraction, evidence collection and more! You will even meet a real CSI and investigate your very own “mock” crime scene. Campers leave as certified “Southeast CSI.”

Electricity in a Snap!

This camp is so fun it’s shocking! Campers will be introduced to electricity and electronics using easy to work with circuits that snap together like Legos. Using these kits, we’ll build things like fans, voice recorders, radios, sirens, and sound detectors.

Course Fees

Fees are listed with individual courses. Course fees include a Horizons t-shirt, field trips, and instructional materials.

Location

Unless otherwise noted, all courses will be held on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University and the surrounding areas. Building and room assignments, along with a campus map, will be sent with confirmation of your registration.

Horizons is offered in three one-week sessions:

  • Week I - June 13-17
  • Week II - June 20 - 24
  • Week III - June 27 - July 1
  • Week IIII - July 18 - July 22
  • Week IIIII- July 27 - July 29

Times*

  • Morning Session - 9 a.m. - Noon
  • Afternoon Session - 1 - 4 p.m.
  • All Day Session - 9 a.m. - noon and 1 - 4 p.m.

*Please note special times for some classes and field trips.

Ages

Horizons is designed for youth ages 9-14. This year, we are also offering courses for children ages 5-8. These courses appear in the “Little Horizons” section. Some courses have special age requirements as noted in the class descriptions.

Class Size

Unless otherwise noted, classes are restricted to 18 participants to ensure a quality experience and ample individual attention.

Instructors

All instructors are professionally trained and have practical teaching experience in their areas of instruction; most are Southeast professors. Individual classes that incorporate laboratory experiments (e.g., the Crime Scene Investigation) or that are physically active (e.g., Wilderness Survival) will have an assistant to provide additional guidance.

T-shirts

Each course enrollment includes a Horizons t-shirt. If you are enrolled in more than one course, you will receive multiple shirts.
