Interview Tips

You have submitted your resume and have been contacted by an organization for an interview. What you do to prepare for an interview is just as important as what you do in the interview. Below are a few tips:

Prepare for the Interview
  • Research, research, research! Visit websites and social media pages to learn as much as possible about the organization for which you are interviewing.
  • Develop your elevator speech, to answer the question, "tell me about yourself."
  • Assess your wardrobe: do you have all the essentials for a professional interview?
  • Have your resume ready to take with you.
  • Know the place of the interview / directions to the location.
  • Confirm the time and date of the interview (double check...ALWAYS double check!)
  • If preparing for a telephone interview, review the Phone Interview Checklist
Practice
  • Schedule a mock interview with Career Services by calling 573-651=2583.
  • Anticipate questions and rehearse responses out loud.
  • Review Interview Checklistand Sample Questions in order to examine your strengths, weaknesses, and goals and decide on examples of experience you will use.
  • Know the position you are applying for (review the job posting, do your research!)
  • Know the interviewer's name and title.
  • Be ready to share the reason you want to work for this company.
After The Interview
  • Send a thank-you note to each person with whom you interviewed. (A handwritten note within 24 hours is best, however email is acceptable, keep it short and polite.)
